Sutter Health is a not-for-profit integrated health system headquartered in Sacramento, California. The company operates 24 acute care hospitals and more than 200 clinics in Northern California.

The Sutter Hospital Association was founded in 1921 in response to the 1918 influenza pandemic.

Sutter Medical Center in Sacramento is located on this site today.

Other Sutter Health hospitals date back to the 19th century and were among Northern California’s first healthcare providers. Thus, the California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco was formed from successive mergers of hospitals and medical schools dating back to the beginnings of organized medicine in the

Late 20th century
Federal budget cuts, the introduction of managed care, and other financial constraints led to an increase in mergers, acquisitions, and affiliations of hospitals and physician organizations.

[6] By 1995, Sutter Health had grown to 18 affiliated hospitals, seven medical foundations (physician organizations) and numerous outpatient centers in Northern California.

The Alta Bates Corporation of Berkeley (now known as Alta Bates Summit Medical Center) joined CHS in 1992, the same year that California Pacific Medical Center was formed, formed

Sutter Health was one of the first health systems in the United States to install barcode medication security technology and an electronic intensive care unit.[8]

Sutter Health physicians and hospitals participate in voluntary and mandatory programs that publicly report patient satisfaction, costs, utilization and quality of care.

In 2016, Truven Health Analytics named Sutter Health one of the top performing health systems in the nation in its 15 Top Health Systems® study.
In 2013, Sutter Davis Hospital became the first hospital in Northern California to receive the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the nation’s highest presidential honor for excellence through innovation,

improvement and visionary leadership.[22]

Legal Actions
In 2004, Sutter Health implemented a system-wide policy of charitable contributions and health discounts for uninsured and underinsured patients.

It later settled with several other health systems in class-action lawsuits involving billing of uninsured patients.[32]

In 2014, the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) union and Employers Benefit Trust (UEBT) filed a class action lawsuit against

[34] The Attorney General and the UFCW ultimately settled their joint cases out of court in December 2019. Under the terms of the settlement,

Sutter was not required to admit any wrongdoing, but will pay $575 million in damages to the plaintiffs and has agreed to end its anti-competitive business practices. [35][36]

Labor market relations

s physician groups, hospitals, home health care and other services have nearly 60 locally negotiated collective agreements with more than a dozen different unions.

Approximately 13,700 employees have chosen to work according to union contracts. [citation needed] In April 2022, more than 8,000 nurses and other health care workers at 15 Sutter Health facilities in Northern California,

represented by the California Nurses Association and affiliated organizations,

went on strike for a day-long collective bargaining agreement demanding “safer staffing” and other contractual requirements.[37] Sutter locked out the striking workers for a week.[38]

Proposed closure of Alta Bates Hospital

In 2016, Sutter Health told the mayor of Berkeley that Sutter Health planned to close Alta Bates by 2030. Sutter argued that it was not possible to make seismic improvements necessary to keep the hospital open.

The City of Berkeley is conducting a study to assess the impact of the Alta Bates closure on the region. A summary presented on May 20, 2024 by Berkeley Mayor Jesse Arreguin and Berkeley City Councilwoman Sophie Hahn noted the effects on people of color, Medi-Cal and Medicare patients
